Dolomite

Dolomite is used as a source of both calcium and magnesium oxides, which act as fluxes in glazes and clay bodies. In glazes dolomite can produce rich, satin-matte surfaces, especially in high-temperature firings. It also influences colour development when combined with metal oxides, creating soft, variegated glaze effects. In clay bodies, dolomite may contribute to strength and durability while helping to control thermal expansion, reducing the risk of crazing. Its balanced fluxing properties make it a valuable ingredient in both functional and decorative ceramics.
