Alumina hydrate is a refractory material which can be used for kiln wash, wadding and adding opacity to glazes. Like calcined alumina, it has a very high melting point, but also a higher shrinkage rate. It may be preferable in a glaze over calcined alumina due to better suspension and adhesion.
