Ball Clay
Ball clay is a highly plastic, fine-grained clay. It is primarily added to clay bodies to enhance plasticity and forming capabilities, as well as achieving smooth, defect-free surfaces. Ball clay also contributes to the green (unfired) strength of wares, but the trade off is a high shrinkage rate. In glazes it is used to improve suspension and provide a stable base for the glaze coating. Ball clay typically fires to an off-white / buff colour.
