Nepheline Syenite
Nepheline syenite is commonly used as a flux to lower the melting point of glazes and clay bodies. Unlike traditional feldspars, it lacks free silica, which contributes to a more stable thermal expansion in fired ceramics. In clay bodies, nepheline syenite enhances vitrification, reducing porosity and increasing strength. In glazes, it promotes smooth melting and can help reduce defects such as crazing. However, due to its slightly soluble nature, it may cause gelling in glaze slurries over time, necessitating careful formulation and handling.
