A naturally occurring mineral composed primarily of titanium dioxide, rutile is widely used to create rich glaze textures and colour variations. It acts as both a colourant and flux, producing warm, variegated tones such as browns, yellows, oranges, and blues, especially in reduction firings. Rutile encourages the development of mottled, speckled, and streaked glaze effects, adding depth and complexity to surfaces. It is commonly used in stoneware and porcelain glazes, where its unpredictable reactions can create dynamic, decorative finishes.
