Ilmenite sand, a naturally occurring iron-titanium oxide mineral, is used in ceramics to create unique glaze effects and surface textures. When added to glazes, it produces speckling, mottling, and subtle variegation, often seen in rustic or reduction-fired ceramics. In clay bodies, ilmenite can introduce dark specks, enhancing the visual depth of stoneware and earthenware. Its high iron content also contributes to colour development in high-temperature firings, particularly in reduction atmospheres. Due to its refractory nature, ilmenite is sometimes used in specialized ceramic applications that require heat resistance.
