MAYCO Specialty Stoneware | SW404 Black Mudcrack

Mayco's Mudcrack glazes produce dramatic surface effects during firing. As the glaze contracts and separates in the kiln, it creates a distinctive "crawling" texture with irregular edges and a tactile depth. Also sometimes called a "lichen" glaze.

The amount of cracking and depth of texture depends on application thickness. A thinner coat will produce a finer network of cracks with a relatively smoother surface, while heavier application encourages larger crack patterns and a more pronounced texture. Mudcrack can be used on its own directly on bisqueware, or layered with other midfire and stoneware glazes. When layered, the texture may flatten as it melts into the other glaze/s.

Due to the nature of "crawling" glazes, very thick application may cause unfired glaze to fall off the bisque surface. Take extra care when moving to the kiln. If the glaze becomes too thick in the jar, stir or shake vigorously for a more workable consistency.

Cone 6 oxidation: Black Mudcrack is a high-texture glaze that forms a raised, cracked surface. The thicker the application, the more textured the surface will be.

Cone 10 reduction: Texture flattens, colour remains black.

Please note: Due to its heavily textured surface, this glaze is not suitable for dinnerware or food-contact surfaces.
