MAYCO Specialty Stoneware | SW405 Light Magma

Mayco's Magma glaze is formulated to produce a dramatic, cratered "lava" surface during firing. As the glaze melts and releases gases, it expands and breaks open to create a highly textured, volcanic finish.

The level of cratering is largely determined by application thickness. A thinner coat will produce a lightly textured surface with minimal cratering and a subtle sandpaper-like feel. When applied heavily, the glaze develops deeper craters and a more pronounced, dimensional texture.

Magma can be applied directly to bisque-fired ware or used in combination with other midfire and stoneware glazes to add surface variation and texture.

Cone 6 oxidation: Light Magma is a sand-coloured, high-texture glaze that creates a rough, cratered surface. The thicker the application, the more textured the surface will be.

Cone 10 reduction: Texture slightly flattens. Colour changes to a cream/grey.

Please note: Due to its heavily cratered texture, this glaze is not suitable for dinnerware or food-contact surfaces.
