Strontium Carbonate

Strontium carbonate is used as a flux in glazes, often as an alternative to barium carbonate, as it produces similar effects while being safer to handle. Strontium enhances glaze glossiness, promotes smooth melting, and can contribute to rich colour development and effects, especially when interacting with certain metal oxides. However it does have a tendency to release gases during firing which may contribute to pinholing defects in the glaze surface.
